Waiting on Wednesday 5

Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week I want to talk about a book I'm just drooling for.  House Rules by Chloe Neill.  This book releases in just a few short days on February 5th, 2013! I've been a lover of the Chicagoland Vampires for some time.  Love to wear my "Sentinel" t-shirt and drink my Saturday morning coffee from my Cadogan House mug!  I'm a Cadogan Junkie.  I fell in love with Merit's character right from the first book.  She's witty and smart and has turned into a kick-ass vampire.  I love Ethan for Merit.  I know there have been contenders for her guy, but Ethan is "it".  Read on for the synopsis of House Rules by Chloe Neill.

At the tender age of 27, Merit became a sword-wielding vampire. Since then, she’s become the protector of her House, watched Chicago nearly burn to the ground, and seen her Master fall and rise. Now she’ll see her mettle—and her metal —tested like never before.

It started with two . . . Two rogues vanishing without a trace. Someone is targeting Chicago’s vampires, and anyone could be next. With their house in peril, Merit and her Master, the centuries old Ethan Sullivan, must race to stop the disappearances. But as they untangle a web of secret alliances and ancient evils, they realize their foe is more familiar, and more powerful, than they could have ever imagined.

Review ~ Lothaire by Kresley Cole

Goodreads Synopsis ~

ALL FEAR THE ENEMY OF OLD

Driven by his insatiable need for revenge, Lothaire, the Lore’s most ruthless vampire, plots to seize the Horde’s crown. But bloodlust and torture have left him on the brink of madness—until he finds Elizabeth Peirce, the key to his victory. He captures the unique young mortal, intending to offer up her very soul in exchange for power, yet Elizabeth soothes his tormented mind and awakens within him emotions Lothaire believed he could no longer experience.

A DEADLY FORCE DWELLS WITHIN HER

Growing up in desperate poverty, Ellie Peirce yearned for a better life, never imagining she’d be convicted of murder—or that an evil immortal would abduct her from death row. But Lothaire is no savior, as he himself plans to sacrifice Ellie in one month’s time. And yet the vampire seems to ache for her touch, showering her with wealth and sexual pleasure. In a bid to save her soul, Ellie surrenders her body to the wicked vampire, while vowing to protect her heart.

CENTURIES OF COLD INDIFFERENCE SHATTERED

Elizabeth tempts Lothaire beyond reason, as only his fated mate could. As the month draws to a close, he must choose between a millennia-old blood vendetta and his irresistible prisoner. Will Lothaire succumb to the miseries of his past . . . or risk everything for a future with her?

My Review ~

I was on the fence going into this one.  From the earlier books, we all know that Lothaire is crazy.  I think at this point, since I'm such a strong Valkrie ally, I would say he is the enemy whether he was crazy or not.  Lothaire has been alive a very long time and has endured enough torture, pain and other people's memories, to crack anyone.  I feel like I shouldn't pity him, but his dwindling control on his madness along with the frustration he feels makes me actually feel that for him.

Ellie is a great heroine.  Ok, just did some backspacing here and trying to reword so I don't leave spoilers.  There is much, much more to Ellie than the blurb says and I don't want to ruin it.  Let's just say Ellie is self-sacrificing and will do anything to save her family and others from harm, and this evil being who snatches her up is definitely a threat to them.

We have two very different creatures that are both extremely stubborn.  There is this little thing called a blooding between them that just cranks up the tension.  How can they be so opposite yet set each other on fire?

Lothaire kind of pissed me off a bit with his attitude.  I know, I know, he's crazy, we have to cut him some slack.  Seriously?  This dude thinks every female should adore him.  He doesn't grasp that the things he says would hurt people.  How can you live that long and not realize you are degrading and hurting someone with your words?  Ugh, he reminded me of a selfish self-centered brat.  Ellie is stubborn but is she determined enough that she could change him?

I thought this book was great.  There were a few times I was scared of what the ending was going to bring.  With Lothaire's madness, you just can't be sure of anything.  I was happy to get to see my old friend the Valkries along with Thad and Hag.  I can't wait for the next one.  I have so many questions about what is going to happen with alliances, etc.  After one scene in this book, I'm sure Lothaire is going to have some major problems with the witches.

Right now I feel like a toddler being offered up a carrot instead of the candy with Shadow's Claim out there.  I know it's a spin off, but I don't want a spin off, I want the next Immortals book.  *pouts*  I will read Shadow's Claim anyway, even though I'm mad at it for getting in the way of releasing an Immortals book. humph

So, for readers of the Immortals After Dark series, you HAVE to read Lothaire.  Don't stop in the middle of the series, keep it going.  You are going to love the outcome.  My rating is a 4.5.  I know, I know, I need a nice set of rating graphics so I don't have to type this in everytime!

Sunday Post Edition 8

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. ~ It's a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

Hi everyone!  I still have not got up to full speed yet with my blogging.  I think I have too many ideas in my head that I want to get straight for the new year that I'm not actually completing any of them.  Time to reevaluate again!  But that is ok, I'll get it.  Does anyone have some good time management skills?  For some reason, it has become a big deal to my family that I start getting active.  Seems they think I spend too much time blogging, chatting, reading and the regular Facebook and Twitter stuff.  Well getting active would be easier if I could still get to do the things I love.  I'm trying to work it so that I walk during my lunch break, but some days (most days) I don't get away.  That leaves the evening, but that is my reading/social media time.  Ahhh, I will get into a routine eventually.

So, in my blog world, I did not get a Sunday Post done last Sunday, but I did do an 18 & Over Book Blog Follow.  That one might become a regular.  I like the meme's where the Host's asks a question for everyone to answer and generate a full post about.

For reading, I finally finished Lothaire.  There were many evenings this week that I spent furious with myself for not being able to get more reading in.  I will post my review on that this week.  I'm also listening to Sleepwalkers by Wendy Corsi Staub.  I am right at the end, and damn it if I didn't want to keep on driving right on by my exit so I could have more time to listen.  I'm at a really great spot, but I've limited my audiobooks to the car, so, hopefully tomorrow will bring a conclusion to my anxiety.  It's not good to leave those thriller cliffhangers for so long.  It's going to drive me crazy.
Now I did something I shouldn't have.  I had two dogs that got taken to the shelter and then adopted before I could find them.  One of them was my pug, my baby, and I've been wanting to get another one since.  My problem is that the chihuahua I have is not neutered (or is it spayed for a girl?).  The Pug Rescue will not adopt out if you have other pets that are not fixed.  I would take my Daisy to a Low Cost Spay/Neuter place, but she is over 5 years old and they will not work on her.  So, I have to justify the cost of both a vet's bill and an adoption fee to my husband.  It's not working out the best.  My birthday is coming up and maybe I'll be able to make some headway.  Anyway, what I did yesterday will not help my cause.  The animal shelter in my city posted a picture of this scared, tiny chihuahua for adoption.  The weekend special was $25 for dogs which included their sterilization and vaccinations.  So, I went to meet this tiny little piece of love.  I wanted to leave with all of them.  I hate seeing all those animals there.  Many thanks goes out to all the volunteers at the shelter who bring a little joy and love to all those animals.  So, I did it.  I fell in love with the little feller and I will be bringing him home from the vet on Tuesday.  I hope my Daisy will behave, she can be such a bitch, lol.  My husband didn't freak like I thought he would, but I put the pug begging off for a bit.  We'll see how our new addition works out.  His name is Peanut and I'll probably be ranting about him for awhile.

I've been wondering.  What are all you other bloggers doing about this Facebook thing where our post visibility is so low?  Has anyone found a good way to get around this?  Would love to hear some thoughts and ideas on Marketing.  Well, maybe I should focus on putting up some content to actually market, right? ;)

How was everyone else's week, drop me a comment and share some news on your week, or even leave me a link to your Sunday Post!

Have a great week everyone!

Question of the Week: Do you gravitate toward a specific genre or sub-genre when you're feeling under the weather?
Well, I'm a little late getting in on the action, but I'm going to throw my answer up anyway ;)

I don't really find I make a conscious decision to read something different when I am sick.  If I sit and think about the times when I've been sick and what I'd been reading at the time, I think the times when I was reading something light-hearted and funny were probably the best.  I find that Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series is good for that.  They are not as intense, I don't think.

How about you all?  Any favorites when you are not feeling the best?

Question of the Week: Are you on any author street teams? If so, which ones? If not, would you ever consider joining one to help promote an author? And who's would you like to join?

I am really new to the blogging/reviewing world, and have only recently heard of street teams.  When I like an author's work, I like to spread the world to everyone!  I think I would be great on a street team!  So someone needs to tell me more about them.  I am going to list my ten top authors that I would love to be on street teams for.

  1. JR Ward
  2. Sherrilyn Kenyon
  3. Gena Showalter
  4. Lara Adrian
  5. Kresley Cole
  6. Jeaniene Frost
  7. Jennifer Estep
  8. Chloe Neill
  9. Karin Slaughter
  10. Chelsea Cain
Oh wow, I am finding a lot of authors that I would love to actively promote. They are all already so established they probably don't need any extra promoting.  There are so many more that I would add to this list.  So now I need to know more, share the knowledge guys!

Leave me some comments and visit the others on the hop!

Review ~ Dreams of a Dark Warrior

Goodreads Synopsis ~
HE VOWED HE’D COME FOR HER . . . Murdered before he could wed Regin the Radiant, warlord Aidan the Fierce seeks his beloved through eternity, reborn again and again into new identities, yet with no memory of his past lives.

SHE AWAITS HIS RETURN . . .

When Regin encounters Declan Chase, a brutal Celtic soldier, she recognizes her proud warlord reincarnated. But Declan takes her captive, intending retribution against all immortals—unaware that he belongs to their world.

TO SATE A DESIRE MORE POWERFUL THAN DEATH . . .

Yet every reincarnation comes with a price, for Aidan is doomed to die when he remembers his past. To save herself from Declan’s torments, will Regin rekindle memories of the passion they once shared—even if it means once again losing the only man she could ever love?

My Review ~
I was really anxious to get to Regin's story.  She is one of my favorite Valkrie because of her fearlessness and her attitude.  She always makes me laugh.  In this book, it was really hard for me to see her in such a serious situation and how she was going to handle it.

Declan Chase doesn't know for sure what he is, but he is doing everything he can to suppress it.  Instead he takes out his hatred on all the creatures of the Lore.  His orders cause a lot of torture and pain to even the good guys.

I read this story with a heavy heart.  I could not for the life of me figure out how it would be possible for Regin to get her HEA.  She's been one of the people tortured by the prison and how she could get past that and forgive him was beyond me.  Even if she could get past it, and "run into his arms", how would the rest of the Lore forgive him for the pain he has caused?  I didn't know if anyone would consider that he was someone from the Lore in a previous life or not.  I wanted Regin to be happy, to have her HEA, but will she have to wait until Aidan's next reincarnation before she can finally get it?  I will say I absolutely HATED seeing my carefree, fun-loving Regin in this position.

The action in this book is certainly a good battle of the Accession.  We have the two sides of the Lore in a good battle and I'm still trying to figure out Lothaire, who seems to be walking a fine line between the Pravus and the Vertas.  I can't wait to read his book to find out which side he is actually going to align with.

I loved this book and definitely worth a 4.5 to me.  Although, the epilogue in this book really worries me about the future of my favorite Valkrie and whether I will continue to see her in upcoming books.  You'll have to read it to figure out why though!

I would love to hear your views on this book, or even the series as a whole.  Don't forget to leave a comment!

Review ~ Demon From the Dark

Goodreads Synopsis:

A dangerous demon she can't resist...

Malkom Slaine: tormented by his sordid past and racked by vampiric hungers, he's pushed to the brink by the green-eyed beauty under his guard.

A maddening witch he aches to claim...

Carrow Graie: hiding her own sorrows, she lives only for the next party or prank. Until she meets a tortured warrior worth saving.

Trapped together in a savage prison...

In order for Malkom and Carrow to survive, he must unleash both the demon and vampire inside him. When Malkom becomes the nightmare his own people feared, will he lose the woman he craves body and soul?

My Review:

I really wanted to like Carrow, she's one of Regin's closest party friends, and I love, love Regin.  She is going to take on a responsibility that is going to cut into that party hard life, and also is going to make her do something that could ruin the rest of her life.

My heart breaks for Malkom.  His whole life has been one large tragedy and has condemned himself to a long, lonely life.  Finally something truly amazing has dropped right into his lap and he will do anything to keep it.

I fell in love with Malkom, the strong, tragic hero and the task that Carrow has been given, well I just can't believe she can do it.  She has to find some way to accomplish what she's been sent to do without totally betraying this man.  Carrow is caught in between two very important people and is going to have to make a sacrifice.  I do not envy her the position she is in.  Sometimes I down right hated her even though I know she was doing what she HAD to.

I also have to mention that the events leading up to the Accession are heating up so all the major players need to be setting up in their positions.  Near the ending of this book is one helluva event, which I think is going to lead into some major excitement in the next few books.

I think that this book deserves a 4.5.  It was a very emotional book and I think I felt my icy heart crack a bit for Malkom.

Sunday Post Edition 7

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. ~ It's a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

My blog week has pretty much been a bust.  I'm not achieving my goals and kind of getting frustrated finding the time to do everything on my wish list.  I will keep on keeping on though.  Try to squeeze more blog time in as well as more reading time.  I increased my Goodreads reading challenge by 10 books this year and am off to a terrible start.  BUT, I will try harder this week.  I have the Goodreads challenge, but I also signed up for the 2013 Audio Book Challenge that is hosted by The Book Nympho and Hot Listens.  Audio books are a new thing for me, but have found them to be great company on the long drives to work and back.  I've also signed up for the 2013 E-book Challenge hosted by www.workadayreads.com.  I think that is going to be it for the 2013 Challenges.  I found myself scrambling at the end of 2012 trying to get in my Goodreads challenge!  I achieved it though, YAY ME!

I posted 2 review posts this week, one for Kill You Twice by Chelsea Cain and one for Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole.  I think I just surprised myself, I thought I only put out one post but I actually did two, again, YAY ME! I was looking back through posts and was really surprised to see that I had reviewed so few of the Kresley Cole books I've been reading.  I've obviously  been devouring them and not taking the time between to talk about them.  This close to the Accession I really need to be talking about them.
Currently I am finishing up Dreams of a Dark Warrior, I am so freaking out trying to figure out how this one is going to end.  Next up is Lothaire!  I am also listening to Sleepwalker by Wendy Corsi Staub.  It is the second of the Nightwatcher series.

My goal this week is to do 2 reviews and the Waiting on Wednesday meme.  Hold me to it people!

I hope you all have a great week!

Review ~ Pleasure of a Dark Prince

Goodreads Synopsis:

A Dangerous Beauty

Lucia the Huntress: as mysterious as she is exquisite, she harbors secrets that threaten to destroy her—and those she loves.

An Uncontrolled Need

Garreth MacRieve, Prince of the Lykae: the brutal Highland warrior who burns to finally claim this maddeningly sensual creature as his own.

That lead to a pleasure so wicked...

From the shadows, Garreth has long watched over Lucia. Now, the only way to keep the proud huntress safe from harm is to convince her to accept him as her guardian. To do this, Garreth will ruthlessly exploit Lucia's greatest weakness—her wanton desire for him.

My Review:

So we have Lucia the Huntress in this installment of the Immortals After Dark. Don’t get me wrong, I like Lucia, but she is not my favorite Valkrie. All the other Valkries seem so lighthearted and carefree, but Lucia doesn’t seem as fun-loving. She is more serious I guess would be the way to put it. Lucia has a past that will soon come to claim her, as well as the rest of the world, unless she takes care of that past.

Garreth is everything my dream werewolf is, hot, possessive, stubborn (well stubborn could be good or bad) and relentless. He will pursue his mate as far and as long as she makes him. And boy, does she make him!

Lucia is following directions given to her by Nix, who never gives reasons or predicts outcomes, but Nix knows Lucia’s werewolf will be right behind Lucia to keep her safe. They are on a mission that takes them into places few have dared, and to a place that Garreth himself swore he would never go again. I thought that the mission and adventure overshadowed the romance in this book. Which is good because it was exciting. I am starting to realize something though. Everything that happens in the IAD series is part of a bigger plan. I feel kind of stupid because I should have realized sooner that even little pieces of information from each book are going to catch up to me. Now that I am getting closer to the end of the published-so-far books, I’m wishing I had of paid more attention to all the other things that were going on. That pesky little sentence that is in every book when describing the Accession “happens every 500 years… or now”, that should be my warning that all the little tidbits are going to come together to make one giant party. Maybe I will go back a few books and reread them. I’m always missing something.

Oh! Garreth gets Lucia the most awesome gift! I was almost as excited as she was!

So I’m giving Pleasure of a Dark Prince 4 stars. I was thinking 3.5 because the romance wasn’t as hyped up as usual, or maybe it just didn’t stick with me as well as some of the action scenes in the book, but ultimately I decided the action (and scary creatures) made up for it.

Review ~ Kill You Twice by Chelsea Cain

Goodreads Synopsis ~ Nothing makes Portland detective Archie Sheridan happier than knowing that Gretchen Lowell—the serial killer whose stunning beauty is belied by the gruesome murders she’s committed—is locked away in a psych ward. Archie can finally heal from the near-fatal physical and emotional wounds she’s inflicted on him and start moving on with his life. To this end, Archie throws himself into the latest case to come across his desk: A cyclist has discovered a corpse in Mount Tabor Park on the eastern side of Portland. The man was gagged, skinned, and found hanging by his wrists from a tree. It’s the work of a killer bold and clever enough to torture his victim for hours on a sunny summer morning in a big public park and yet leave no trace. And then Archie gets a message he can’t ignore—Gretchen claims to have inside knowledge about this grisly murder. Archie finally agrees to visit Gretchen, because he can’t risk losing his only lead in the case. At least, that’s what he tells himself . . . but the ties between Archie and Gretchen have always been stronger, deeper, and more complex than he’s willing to admit, even to himself. What game is she playing this time? And even more frightening, what long-hidden secrets from Gretchen’s past have been dredged up that someone would kill to protect? At once terrifying and magnetic, “Beauty Killer” Gretchen Lowell returns with a vengeance in Kill You Twice, Chelsea Cain’s latest razor-sharp psychological thriller.

My Review ~ I don't want to come off as being this crazy person that likes their thrillers to be incredibly gory, but I missed some of it in Night Season.  I also missed Gretchen.  I was so pleased to get into Kill You Twice and find that all that I missed was back, and with a bang!

I do not know what is up with the people Portland that they sentenced the uber-killer to a psychiatric hospital instead of giving her the death penalty or at least life in prison.  They KNOW how cunning and manipulative she is.  She knows how to work the system, and she knows how to work Archie.  Gretchen knows that Archie will take whatever leads he can take in a case, so cannot stay away when she claims she has information in his newest case.  He was doing so well.  Getting on with his life, without Gretchen.  Archie is getting his shit together more and more each book, and Kill You Twice takes him even farther, but is seeing Gretchen again going to make all his progress shrivel away?

Of course we can't have a Gretchen/Archie novel without Susan Ward.  I love how Susan has different colored hair each book.  She is spunky, inquisitive and up for anything.  Her role is not huge in this book, but she always seems to bring me a little breath of fresh air when we swing to her POV.

Plus, just to entice you to read this even more, you actually learn more about Gretchen and how she got started!  THAT alone made this book worth the read.  Oh and I'm not going to spoil anything, but the end of the book was amazing!  I really enjoyed it and will give this book a 4 out of 5. Read for Audio Challenge.

Hellloooo everyone!

My blog is in serious need of some attention.  I thought just the holidays were bad, but then I could't keep an internet connection long enough to actually write a post or review.  It's funny, I think it is Dell's.  Everyone in the house suddenly couldn't hold a connection.  I've had to buy USB wireless adapters for all the Dell machines.  The only thing we did different for Christmas was add one wired desktop machine and one Dell laptop.  It was maddening not to be able to get on.  Especially after I finished Edge of Dawn by Lara Adrian.  I SO want to rant and rave on that book.  I will post my review for that one on release day.  Make sure to watch for it!
With all the extra time away from the computer, I was able to get some reading done.  I loved every second of it.  We had a white Christmas here in TX which kind of ruined our plans for holiday dinner.  Instead I put in some time assembling gifts that Santa always seems to forget to put together before he leaves them.  Silly man.

I was trying to do some holiday reads and I was disappointed that one of my picks, Mistletoe Mischief was actually a "Christmas in July" contemporary romance.  It wasn't really what I was looking for.  A cute read though.  It's the beginning of a series and I think the next one is set during the Christmas season, but I just wanted to move on.  Maybe I will get back to it next year.

I read and reviewed The Bite Before Christmas, which I enjoyed.  *Waving my Bones flag in the air*.  I can't say enough how much I love that guy!  Cat's a great strong and funny heroine, love her too.  I canNOT wait until Up From the Grave comes out.  I love Jeaniene Frost, we need to clone her so we can get her books out faster!

I am a Kelley Armstrong fan who was very disappointed to see the Women of the Otherworld series end, so when I found this little short story gem, I just had to download it.  Amityville Horrible is a story featuring Jaime Vega.  It has kind of made me look at all the "ghost" shows I watch on TV a little closer.  Who can say what is real and not real?  I guess that is kind of the excitement of them anyway, right?  I also read another of Kelley's e-specials, The Hunter and the Hunted.  This book features Clay and Elena, from Clay's POV.  I've never read any of the guys POV from this series and I enjoyed it and was thinking maybe I will read the Men of the Otherworld book.  Will have to add it to that ever-growing TBR.  There is also a story with Eve as well.  Her stories are a little different for me since she is in a completely different realm and I'm not familiar with it.

Currently, I'm still working through Kresley Cole's Immortal After Dark series. Right now I'm on Dreams of a Dark Warrior.  Regin's story and right now, I just don't see how an HEA is going to come out of this one.  I do know I love Regin, she is so witty.

So that leaves what is upcoming.  I did finish Kill You Twice by Chelsea Cain and will do a review on that.  I really liked that one better than Night Season.  I would also like to review the IAD I have finished recently, so that would be Pleasure of a Dark Prince and Demon From the Dark.
I need to find some good images for my Twitter now too.  Add that to my New Year's list of things to do.  Number one, new Twitter design, number two, full blog redesign.  That one should take me a good long time.  It would be easier if I could think of what I want instead of seeing other's cool designs and thinking "I want that".  I guess that is what a good designer could do for me.  The search is ON!  I was inspired by Felicia at the Geeky Bloggers Book blog to organize my books.  I said inspired, whether that will become an actual action item is still to be determined.  She did an awesome job and the length of time something like that takes is very daunting.

So what is at the top of YOUR to do list for 2013?  Don't forget to leave some recs for good blog designers!

Have a good week!
Tanya
